TUTLA – Chapter 1

Bsulakshana X TUTLA

The Saree

The saree is a magical and the most ethereal garment for me. When Shibani and I started discussing about the fabrics that she uses and what inspires her designs, I knew I was going to fall in love. The magic of a saree is in it’s drapes and the numerous ways that it can be draped. These drapes tell stories of elegance and beauty.

New Zealand based designer Shibani Shetty stays true to her Indian roots and incorporates the most traditional attire and transforms it to international taste and calls it ‘Tutla’, which in tulu means drapes. The Tutla can be worn and styled in any way and form. She gives you the freedom to keep it raw or pimp it up according to your style. It gives you the freedom to be anyone you want to be.

Each saree I wore made me feel graceful. The concept sarees were so easy to wear that you absolutely need no knowledge on how to tie a saree. The Pallu of the sarees can be tweaked and twisted to your whim and fancy. I absolutely adored the balloon sleeves blouse which can be alternatively worn as a top as well!! With the saree, the blouse just adds the right amount of fun and edge. I also loved the earthy color palette and the beautiful silk drapes which are anything but mundane.

This story is about Tutla – A tale about drapes.
